How to Tell If Jewelry Is Valuable
Discovering the authenticity and value of jewelry can be a complex process. Part of the reason is that counterfeit goods are created all over the world every day. That’s why it’s so important to evaluate your items. Often, it requires expertise from a specialist in the field, but there are also some ways you can make the preliminary assessment. Discover what you should look for when evaluating the authenticity of any precious piece.
Hallmarks
One of the easiest ways to determine if something is genuine is by looking for hallmarks or engravings. These inscriptions may indicate the metal, designer or manufacturer and are a good start to finding the value of your treasures. Generally, these impressions are tiny and require magnification or a jeweler’s loupe. Inspect the clasps of your necklaces, inside rings and posts of your earrings to see if you can locate an engraving.
Magnet Test
Did you know that real gold will not attract a magnet? Performing this test is one of the easiest ways to see if your jewelry was crafted with authentic gold. If there’s a connection, imitation gold or other alloys were used to create your piece. Additionally, sterling silver is not magnetic. In some cases, some counterfeited pieces may be inscribed with the 925 hallmark, indicating that it’s real silver. However, if they attract a magnet, you’ll know it’s fake.
Examine the Prongs
If your jewelry features precious diamonds or gemstones, it’s important to inspect the prongs. If you notice that your gems are glued into place, it may be costume jewelry that’s not as valuable. Most fine jewelry pieces showcase gemstones that are set in metal through a variety of techniques, such as prong (solitaire), bezel or tension settings. However, real pearls are occasionally glued into place due to their delicate nature.
